35% of College Students Use AI Tools

A new report by Morning Consult of McGraw Hill indicates that one-third of college students have been using generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Bard to aid in their studies. Around 35% of students have been working on projects using AI chatbots.

The survey, conducted by 200 college instructors and 500 undergraduate students, found that most instructors and students believe that generative AI will improve student learning, with 58% agreeing that AI will improve learning rather than negatively impacting IQ.

The report suggests that with guardrails in place, such as content developed and vetted by trusted academic sources, most instructors and students would be more comfortable using AI tools like ChatGPT.

Ann Raddant, a senior teaching faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, believes AI technology can enhance learning and make teaching more efficient. However, she advises instructors to understand its capabilities and limitations before incorporating it into coursework. Raddant also highlights examples of assignments that help students understand GenAI platforms. A recent survey revealed that 57% of students feel overwhelmed and 56% stressed.
