- Vitalik Buterin opened Devcon 8 in Mumbai with a warning that AI security is trending toward domination by a single organization as deceleration stalls.
- Buterin advocated for zero-knowledge proofs as a primary defense against AI-driven security and privacy threats, highlighting India’s leading role in ZK and digital identity.
- He raised concerns about hardware wallet reliability and warned against making crypto decisions based on social media, citing rampant bot manipulation.
- Buterin highlighted the 2028 deadline for quantum-resistant cryptography, urging accelerated adoption of post-quantum signature schemes across the Ethereum ecosystem.
AI As Both Tool & Threat
In his opening keynote speech at Devcon 8 in Mumbai on November 3, 2026, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin spoke about how AI can be both a tool and a threat. He noted that AI presents new threats to privacy and security but can also help identify flaws.
“We need to be able to trust our operating systems.
We need to be able to trust our hardware.
We need to be able to trust the things that are most relevant to our health.
We need to be able to trust our sources of information and connection to other people.
We need to be able to trust our communication tools.
We need to be able to trust our AI.What is the answer? We need to figure out together.” – @VitalikButerin

Buterin highlighted that currently AI is trending towards being dominated by one company. However he noted that there are fewer efforts to slow down this trend and the crypto community must embrace decentralized tools that protect personal privacy.
Zero-Knowledge Proofs & India’s Rising Role
Buterin said that Zero Knowledge proofs are the best tool available to combat the threats that AI presents. ZK allow proving information without revealing any data.
Buterin noted however that companies should aim to not collect unnecessary data. He highlighted that India is becoming increasingly involved with using ZK proofs and building its digital identity. This is one of the most significant implementations coming out of the country. This comes as India continue to build out their Digital Public Infrastructure Stack.
Hardware Wallets, Social Media & The Quantum Clock
Buterin also touched on how Hardware wallets may not be as reliable as we think. He also notes to crypto users not to make investment decisions based on social media as bots are being used to manipulate information.
He also noted that the 2028 deadline for Quantum resistant cryptography is very serious. We should speed up implementing lattice and STARK based signing. Buterin noted that we need to consider this a pressing issue for node operators and developers.
