Sixteen Companies Now Say No To Tokenized Shares

Sixteen companies have now objected to having tokenized versions of their shares traded on OKXICE, the planned venue from crypto exchange OKX and Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), parent of the New York Stock Exchange. The latest disclosed objectors include Microsoft, Alphabet, Goldman Sachs, Qualcomm, Caterpillar, McDonald’s and Western Digital, taking the total from nine to 16.

How The OKXICE Opt-In Model Would Work

The planned framework would allow companies to opt in or out of having blockchain-based versions of their shares traded. OKXICE has described plans for round-the-clock trading with stablecoin settlement; the tokens are intended to be backed one-for-one by shares and carry equivalent dividend and voting rights.

The objections highlight unresolved questions about how issuers’ rights and investor protections would work in tokenized markets.

Cuomo Calls It A Natural Response

Andrew Cuomo, former New York governor and co-chair of the OKX-ICE joint venture, called the objections a “natural response,” saying companies were expected to wait and see rather than be first to participate in what he described as a dramatic market change. Industry participants have also raised questions about pricing, custody, shareholder rights and investor safeguards.

The objections do not amount to a blanket rejection of tokenization, but they show that issuer participation is a significant hurdle as the proposed venue develops under the SEC’s experimental framework.
