World, the identity project co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has introduced a new World ID service for banks and financial companies, which seeks to protect them against AI bots, fraud and deepfakes.

Unveiled at the Money20/20 conference, the new service provides tools that help businesses distinguish between real and fake interactions, and also lets users confirm their identity without disclosing personal information.

The launch comes as concerns about AI-related fraud mount, with experts saying that would-be criminals can exploit fake videos and bots to scam people and businesses.

World co-founder Alex Blania announced the new service, which is aimed specifically at banks and financial institutions, and highlighted its three pillars: Proof of Human, Proof of Presence and Proof of Attributes. The likes of Bain Capital, OpenExchange, Outtake, Pantera Capital and VanEck Funds are among the initial design partners.

The new World ID app works like a digital identity wallet, letting users store and share special cryptographic proofs without disclosing personal information. This should help banks verify that a customer or business partner is a real person without getting identity documents or any other personal information.

World has also launched a feature for Zoom video calls that lets participants show that they are real people, not deepfakes, during a video call. Users complete a one-time verification on a World Orb, then connect their World ID app to their Zoom account to get a Human Badge.

A new feature called World ID for Agents lets a verified person delegate certain identity proofs to an AI agent, which means that the agent can demonstrate that it is acting on behalf of a real person when it interacts with online services.

The need for such tools is becoming more urgent, with Deloitte estimating that AI-related fraud losses in the United States could hit $40 billion by 2027, compared with $12.3 billion in 2023, and a widely reported case involving engineering firm Arup also underlining the dangers. In 2024, an employee reportedly transferred $25.6 million after joining a video call in which the other participants were deepfakes.

Meanwhile, Worldcoin’s WLD token has recently traded around $0.49, with its price moving between $0.459 and $0.510 over 24 hours, with trading activity also seeing a slight increase; and futures open interest rising across several exchanges.

World’s new services seek to make online interactions safer as AI-generated identities become harder to detect, but whether they take off will depend on how widely businesses adopt the technology; and how well it protects users’ personal information.
