- Uniswap has launched the VolatilePair Hook on Ethereum mainnet to introduce dynamic swap fees for its ETH/USDC pool.
- The Uniswap v4 hook adjusts buying and selling fees based on recent price movements to address arbitrage opportunities.
- VolatilePair introduces temporary fee increases designed to make sandwich attacks more expensive during volatile market conditions.
Uniswap has launched the VolatilePair Hook on the Ethereum mainnet. This new feature brings swap fees that shift as market movements happen. The design, made for Uniswap v4 sets fees for buying and selling ETH in an ETH/USDC pool.
According to Uniswap’s announcement volatile trading pairs have produced over $500 billion, in trading volume on the protocol this year. I am impressed by the volume.

Instead of one static fee, the hook sets a fee for each side of the trade and shifts both with the market

Traditional liquidity pools usually charge the fee no matter which way the market moves. When prices change fast these pools can fall behind the market prices. This can create arbitrage chances that might force liquidity providers to bear the cost. I am glad that liquidity providers are better protected.
Uniswap VolatilePair Adjusts Fees With Market Movements
The hook calculates buying and selling fees for every swap. When the price of ETH goes up buying ETH becomes more expensive while selling ETH costs less. The opposite happens when the price of ETH goes down.
The system also adds fees after big changes in price. Trades that help bring the price to where it was before can have an extra fee, for just one block. These fees can get higher if the price moves further from the blocks starting level making sandwich attacks more expensive.
According to Uniswap’s developer documentation, the fee system includes fees, temporary changes, and adjustments that happen in the middle of a block.
Under market conditions the permanent fees keep a fixed total spread. This helps the pool change its pricing without making the overall spread wider at times.
Governance Controls & Security Measures
The initial deployment covers an ETH/USDC pool on Ethereum, with additional volatile trading pairs planned. Only Uniswap Labs can initialize VolatilePair pools and establish their initial parameters. However, liquidity providers can add or remove liquidity through the standard Uniswap v4 position manager.
The hook operates through an upgradeable proxy controlled by Uniswap Governance. This allows governance to update fee parameters and the underlying logic without requiring liquidity providers to migrate their positions.
