Ripple partners with South Korean securities firm Meritz Securities over digital assets custody and tokenization. The deal was announced this October and is Ripple’s first-ever partnership with a securities firm in Korea. The two companies will explore how the blockchain software provider can utilize its custody and tokenization infrastructure to offer its services in Meritz’s securities business and tokenize assets in Korea’s regulated financial market.

Ripple offers payment and digital asset settlement solutions via blockchain technology. Its custody services aim to provide institutional-level digital asset storage and infrastructure. Meanwhile, tokenization refers to representing physical assets as their digital counterparts on the blockchain. The two companies plan to launch products in phases while considering Korea’s regulatory requirements for digital assets.
They intend to offer custody and tokenization services to digitize some of the securities company’s existing products. Meritz Securities is interested in multiple blockchain-related products, including spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs), fractional ownership of securities, security tokens, trading platforms, and Korean won stablecoins. However, the announcement made this October does not confirm any of these products’ immediate availability.
The managing director for Asia Pacific at Ripple, Fiona Murray stated that Korea is a critical market for digital assets, and financial institutions are at the cusp of transitioning from experimentation to implementation. The partnership announced this October is part of Ripple’s aggressive campaign to partner with prominent financial institutions in Korea.
In particular, Ripple has partnered with South Korea’s Kyobo Life Insurance, Kbank, and Jeonbuk Bank this year. Notably, Jeonbuk Bank’s collaboration with Ripple enables the former to utilize Ripple Payments for its cross-border remittance needs. With Meritz Securities, Ripple continues to build on its network of institutional partners in Korea, spanning banking, insurance, and capital markets.
Meritz Securities’ managing director Byungha Kang stated that the collaboration sought to leverage Ripple’s end-to-end digital asset infrastructure and the securities firm’s capital markets expertise to create secure, reliable, and trustworthy financial services. He further stated that the collaboration aimed to position itself as a digital asset financial services enabler as Korea’s regulatory environment continues to evolve.
The announcement underscores the rising interest in blockchain technology and digital assets among traditional financial institutions. Rather than disrupting the status quo, blockchain enablers such as Ripple seek to retrofit existing financial systems to offer improved services to their customers. The developments, however, remain far from directly influencing Korea’s appetite for XRP.
Although the developments may entice XRP investors, the announcement says little about how the partnership will impact the demand for XRP. Furthermore, the announcement does not specify when the proposed services tailored for Korea’s capital markets will be available. For now, the two firms will explore ways to meet regulatory requirements while developing the much-needed technical infrastructure to deliver on their proposals.
