DATA Network, formerly known as Story and Story Protocol, plans to move away from its independent blockchain and migrate to the Sui network. The transition is backed by a $30 million investment from the Sui Foundation, which is expected to become the largest institutional holder of DATA tokens. The move is intended to support the network’s growing focus on data used to train artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

Under the planned migration, DATA tokens will move to Sui on a one-to-one basis. The foundation says existing token holders will retain their economic benefits and governance rights, while locked tokens and vesting schedules will remain unchanged. The migration date has not yet been announced. The existing chain will continue to operate until the transition is complete, and the foundation says it will publish the timeline and instructions in advance.

The network is also adopting Walrus as its default storage layer. Walrus will be used to store original files, while Sui will support transactions and ownership records. Access controls will help manage who can use protected data. The system is designed to help creators and data providers track the use of their work and establish licensing and payment arrangements.

A key part of the project is Trace, a registry launched in June to record data contributions and related information. The foundation has reported more than 250 million contributions, while earlier reporting put registrations above 270 million. The figures come from the project and have not been independently audited. Trace is also reported to handle more than three million receipts a day.

Applications using the system include Kled, Numo and Oto. Kled is used to onboard large volumes of records, while Numo and Oto supply licensed information to AI laboratories and robotics projects. The wider aim is to make it easier to identify the source of data, manage usage rights and support payments when that data is used.

The Sui Foundation’s investment terms, including the valuation and exact number of tokens involved, have not been disclosed. It is also unclear whether the full $30 million has already been transferred. SY Lee, chairman of Poseidon and chief executive of PIP Labs, is expected to join the Sui Foundation as a strategic adviser.

The project’s direction has evolved since its rebranding in June 2026, when it shifted its focus from intellectual-property licensing towards data for AI training. The move to Sui places that effort within a wider blockchain ecosystem.
