The Trump administration has announced more than $6 billion in science initiatives, including up to $215 million for a quantum computing competition and $2.4 billion in commitments from technology companies for artificial intelligence (AI) tools and computing resources.

The US Department of Energy announced eight research areas on Thursday for its Quantum Genesis Q Competition. The competition aims to encourage companies to develop fault-tolerant quantum computers. These developments are also important for the crypto industry, as powerful quantum computers could one day threaten the cryptography used to protect cryptocurrencies and blockchain transactions.

The quantum computing competition was first announced in September. It will offer funding through milestone-based awards and incentive prizes. Companies will receive support as they demonstrate progress towards building more powerful and reliable quantum systems.

The research areas cover chemistry, materials science, subatomic physics and applied mathematics. The aim is to explore how quantum computing can help solve difficult scientific problems that conventional computers may struggle to handle.

Quantum computing is also drawing attention in the cryptocurrency world. Many blockchain networks use public-key cryptography to secure transactions and protect users’ funds. This system relies on mathematical problems that are extremely difficult for today’s computers to solve.

A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could potentially use an exposed public key to work out the private key linked to it. If that happens, an attacker could gain access to a user’s crypto wallet and steal the funds. However, this remains a future risk. No quantum computer currently exists that can carry out such attacks on cryptocurrencies.

The concern is not limited to the crypto industry. On September 23, three European Union financial watchdogs warned that advances in quantum computing could threaten cryptographic systems used to secure blockchains and financial transactions.

Alongside the quantum computing initiative, the White House announced support for AI research. Eleven technology companies have pledged $2.4 billion in AI tools and computing resources to help researchers at 15 federal agencies.

Nvidia has committed $1 billion, while AMD has pledged $500 million. OpenAI has committed $200 million, and Anthropic and Google have each pledged $150 million.

The initiatives show the US government’s interest in supporting advanced computing and scientific research. For the crypto industry, progress in quantum computing will be worth watching closely. Although the technology is not yet capable of breaking the cryptography used by cryptocurrencies, future advances could make stronger security measures necessary.
