U.S. President Donald Trump is likely to appoint Jay Clayton, the U.S. director of national intelligence, as the country’s new AI czar, according to CNN and other media reports.
Clayton could also be asked to administer AI innovation and development, while working with technology executives on voluntary “self-policing” measures for the swiftly expanding artificial intelligence sector.

Part Of A Broader AI Oversight Structure
The probable appointment comes after Trump indicated plans to establish a new structure for managing AI development in the United States by creating an “AI Force,” modelled after the U.S. Space Force, along with an artificial intelligence czar. Trump had said on Truth Social that the initiative would supervise the fast-growing AI industry while avoiding regulations that could slow technological innovation.
The move comes amongst growing public and industry concerns about the risks associated with increasingly powerful AI systems. Trump’s administration has previously highlighted the importance of maintaining U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence while corresponding innovation with concerns over potential risks.
Industry Voices Warn About Pace Of Development
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has also warned about the pace of AI development. Earlier, Amodei had proposed a three-step approach to managing the speed of AI development. He warned that if development continues unchecked, artificial intelligence could eventually “outrun our ability to understand and control these systems.”
Clayton’s Role Could Extend Beyond Intelligence
If Clayton takes on the AI role, his responsibilities could therefore cover beyond intelligence matters to include oversight of innovation and discussions with technology companies over how the sector accomplishes itself. The appointment would come as governments and technology companies stay debating how best to balance AI innovation, safety and regulation.
