MultiversX is facing a trading review at South Korean exchange Upbit after an attempted mainnet exploit forced the network to halt progression. Upbit placed EGLD/KRW, EGLD/BTC and EGLD/USDT under trading caution on September 21, citing an unresolved security incident that could cause user losses. EGLD deposits and withdrawals had already been suspended on September 19.

MultiversX reported that someone tried to take advantage of a virtual machine atomicity issue. This caused invalid state changes and led developers to halt the network.

The incident started on September 19, when MultiversX said it was looking into a possible problem with its mainnet. At first, the team focused on keeping users safe and the network stable, and did not call it an exploit right away.

A later update provided more details, saying an actor had attempted to exploit a VM-level atomicity issue. According to the project, the attempt resulted in invalid state changes. Validators then stopped network progression while developers worked on a solution.

MultiversX prepared a software fix and tested it through a controlled environment. The project said deployment would require successful testing and coordination with validators, exchanges and infrastructure providers.

The network has remained subject to restrictions while the recovery process continues. MultiversX has advised users not to submit or rebroadcast transactions and not to use EGLD or ESDT deposit and withdrawal routes through exchanges or bridges until the project gives an all-clear. A later project update said the recovery would involve a coordinated hard fork from a known-good checkpoint, with testing involving validators.

The incident has also affected other exchanges. Bithumb suspended EGLD deposits and withdrawals on September 19 after block production stopped. Kraken placed EGLD trading pairs into cancel-only mode, allowing users to cancel existing orders while preventing new trades. Coinbase also reported delays involving EGLD sends and receives because of the MultiversX network issue.
