MANTRA’s token hit a record low after the real-world asset-focused blockchain halted its network following a software exploit. The token fell to around $0.004126 shortly before MANTRA Chain stopped producing blocks, while the project froze transactions, deposits and withdrawals as it investigated the incident.

MANTRA later said an attacker had exploited a vulnerability in an “upstream dependency”, referring to software used by the blockchain but developed outside the network. Developers are now preparing a patch while validators remain offline.

The sharp fall in the token came at a particularly sensitive moment for the project. MANTRA had been trying to build a blockchain focused on bringing traditional financial assets, including funds and bonds, onto public blockchain infrastructure.

According to the information provided, the token fell from about $0.005060 to its record low around 11:10 p.m. UTC on Thursday. It later recovered partially to around $0.0044. More recent market reports also showed the token remaining under pressure as the network remained halted.

The blockchain recorded its last block at roughly 11:13 p.m. UTC, only minutes after the token touched its low. MANTRA then announced that it had halted the chain as a precaution while investigating the incident. The project initially said that all network endpoints and transactions had been frozen. Deposits and withdrawals on affected exchanges were also paused.

A later update provided more information about the cause. MANTRA said the attacker had exploited a vulnerability in an upstream software dependency. The team said it had identified the vulnerability and was preparing a patched release.

The next step is to test the fix and coordinate a restart with MANTRA’s validators. Validators are responsible for verifying transactions and helping keep the blockchain running, so bringing the network back online requires coordination across the wider operator group.

MANTRA is also tracing the movement of funds and working with cryptocurrency exchanges as it assesses the impact. At the time of the reports, the project had not disclosed exactly how the exploit was carried out, whether assets were stolen or the full financial impact.

The incident affects more than just trading. MANTRA’s public endpoints, validators and bridge operations were also disrupted, potentially affecting how the network communicates with other blockchains.
