The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is set to hold the first meeting of its Innovation Advisory Committee today, putting crypto regulation, artificial intelligence and prediction markets in the spotlight. The public meeting comes a day after President Donald Trump hosted crypto executives, prediction-market leaders and senior U.S. financial regulators at the White House, where he urged Congress to pass a “fair version” of the CLARITY Act. CFTC Chairman Mike Selig has said the U.S. faces an important choice in how it approaches emerging financial technologies.

The Innovation Advisory Committee’s inaugural session will bring industry participants and technology experts together for a public discussion on how new technologies are changing financial markets. The meeting will cover three broad areas, beginning with the evolution of cryptocurrency regulation.

Participants are expected to discuss the absence of a comprehensive federal market-structure framework, differences between state licensing systems and the role of enforcement actions in shaping crypto regulation. They will also examine how regulators could work alongside legislation that Congress may eventually approve.

The second session will focus on artificial intelligence and financial markets. Among the issues is the rise of autonomous AI agents that could execute transactions or manage investment portfolios with limited human involvement.

Prediction markets will form the third major part of the agenda. The discussion is expected to examine the respective roles of federal and state authorities in regulating event-based contracts. Platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket have faced disputes with state regulators over whether some event contracts should come under federal derivatives rules or state gambling laws.

The CFTC meeting follows Wednesday’s White House gathering, where Trump met crypto and financial-market leaders, including CFTC Chair Mike Selig and SEC Chair Paul Atkins. Trump used the meeting to push Congress to move forward with the CLARITY Act, which is intended to establish a broader federal framework for digital-asset markets.

The political backdrop is particularly relevant as lawmakers continue negotiations on the bill. The Senate is working toward a September 15 procedural vote after Congress left for the August recess without advancing the legislation. Disagreements remain over issues including ethics rules, enforcement authority, illicit finance provisions and the balance between federal and state powers.

Unlike the White House meeting, Thursday’s Innovation Advisory Committee session will be open to the public and will follow a published agenda. Entrepreneurs, technology specialists and other market participants are expected to offer views on the practical challenges created by emerging financial technologies.

The CFTC will also accept written comments on the committee’s work through August 27. For the agency, the meeting is an opportunity to look beyond cryptocurrency alone and examine how several fast-changing technologies could reshape financial markets and the regulatory system.
