  • According to Tom Lee, co-founder of Fundstrat, if the industry is not ready, quantum computers may pose a danger to Bitcoin by 2028 or 2029.
  • According to experts, between 30% and 35% of Bitcoin’s supply is stored in outdated or repeated addresses, which could make them more susceptible to quantum attacks in the future.
  • The risk is still theoretical because there is currently no quantum computer strong enough to crack Bitcoin’s cryptography.

During a recent live appearance, Tom Lee, co-founder of Fundstrat Global Advisors, made a concerning prediction that quantum computers could hack Bitcoin as early as 2028 or 2029. He claims that if the industry does not become ready in time, the current security of Bitcoin may someday be compromised by the rapid advancement of quantum computing.

In a recent live appearance, Lee cautioned that if the industry does not fully prepare, the current security architecture of Bitcoin could be compromised by the rapid improvements in quantum technology.

Lee pointed to Google’s recent quantum research and said the crypto industry still has no clear plan to deal with the technology if it advances faster than expected. His remarks have sparked a new discussion on whether Bitcoin is prepared for the upcoming era of computing.

Tom Lee Vs Adam Back

Adam Back, the founder of Hashcash and a well-known Bitcoin cypherpunk, swiftly clarified the crucial detail that underlies Tom Lee’s startling claim. He pointed out that BTC does not utilize encryption to conduct transactions in the first place.

Digital signatures, particularly ECDSA, safeguard coin ownership, and users’ seed phrases are protected by a high degree of entropy that a quantum computer cannot simply brute-force.

The actual vulnerability of Bitcoin to Shor’s algorithm appears differently and impacts a particular target. For only 30% to 35% of the overall supply, the quantum clock is ticking.

BIP-361 Sparks Debate

Bitcoin might undergo a hard fork to incorporate quantum-resistant signature techniques if quantum threats materialize. Active holders would be able to transfer coins from vulnerable addresses to secure ones. However, it is unlikely that the original owners of assets in lost wallets or long-inactive addresses, such as the roughly $1 million in Bitcoin attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto, will be able to secure them.

Use the controversial BIP-361 plan to freeze about one-third of all Bitcoin, or else you run the danger of leaving these inactive coins open to possible quantum attacks.

A contentious proposal called BIP-361 would enable the network to freeze coins that are vulnerable to quantum theft. If implemented, it would be an unprecedented intervention that would confront long-standing concepts of immutability and decentralization against the maintenance of network integrity.
