Hashdex said it will liquidate its eponymous spot-price Bitcoin exchange-traded fund this month, returning the money to all remaining shareholders and selling the fund’s roughly 225 BTC holdings.

In a filing Monday, the fund issuer said the decision was made after assessing factors such as trading liquidity, operating costs and investor interest. The 200,000 shares of the fund have traded under the DEFI ticker on NYSE ARCA since March 2024 and have net assets of $14.25 million, the fund’s website says.

The ProShares ETF had some competition in the form of 10 other BTC ETFs, which launched months before the ProShares ETF. Analysts saw opportunity as BTC was trading for the then-all-time high of more than $73,000.

“Despite being so late, the getting is so good right now I could see this one getting some bites (if the fee is competitive),” Bloomberg Senior ETF analyst Eric Balchunas said in a post March 27, 2024.

According to data tracker SoSoValue, Hashdex Bitcoin Futures ETF, a Bitcoin futures ETF launched in 2022, hit a high of $17.54 million of assets on May 9, 2025. The next largest ETF of the US-traded BTC issues is the WisdomTree Bitcoin Trust (BTCW) with net assets of $140.37 million as of the market close Friday.
