The banking infrastructure for X Money, the financial services platform being created by Elon Musk’s social media platform X, will be supplied by financial technology startup Cross River. Peer-to-peer payments, FDIC-insured interest-bearing accounts, and Visa debit cards will all be made possible by the agreement, advancing X’s objective of becoming a “everything app” that blends financial services and social networking.

Cross River announced that its regulated banking platform and payment network will power the core financial services offered through X Money. As the platform grows, the infrastructure is built to handle future financial products in addition to payments.

There were no intentions to support stablecoins or cryptocurrencies in the statement. Rather, the emphasis is still on standard banking services like debit card access, savings features, and money transfers.

Cross River is already a well-known provider of embedded financial infrastructure. Through its regulated banking platform, the company provides a variety of fintech companies with payment processing, lending, card issuing, and cryptocurrency-related banking services.

In May 2025, Elon Musk first announced that X Money has started restricted beta testing. He stated at the time that the deployment will be gradual since managing clients’ funds calls for “extreme care.”

The service was expanded into a limited external beta in March 2026, laying the groundwork for a more extensive public launch.

Musk has expressed his desire for an all-in-one digital platform since acquiring Twitter in 2022 and rebranding it as X. The company has registered with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) and secured money transmitter licenses in more than 40 U.S. states to enable peer-to-peer payment services.

Another significant step toward developing the financial infrastructure required to compete with well-established payment systems is the collaboration with Cross River. While crypto integration remains absent for now, X Money is steadily moving toward becoming a broader financial ecosystem that combines payments, banking and digital services within a single application.
