The Open Network (TON) has drawn new investor interest after announcing plans to rebrand its native cryptocurrency from Toncoin (TON) to Gram (GRAM), returning to the token’s original name from its 2018 white paper.
Telegram founder Pavel Durov said this move brings the network back to its roots and starts a new chapter for the ecosystem. The proposal says the transition will take about three weeks and users won’t need to swap tokens or move assets. Existing balances, wallet addresses, smart contracts, and positions will stay the same.
The proposal already has strong community support, with nearly 80% of pledged tokens voting for the rebrand. TON said the change is part of a bigger plan to strengthen its identity and expand its role in Telegram’s growing Web3 ecosystem.
The network plans to power payments, mini-apps, digital ownership, AI services, and other blockchain applications for Telegram’s huge global user base. The rebrand also comes as Telegram gets more involved in the network’s development and validation.
At the time of writing, TON was trading near $2.00, up about 3.4% in the past 24 hours, with daily trading volume close to $700 million. The token has regained some momentum after the announcement, but it’s still well below its all-time high of $8.25 set in 2024.
Now, market watchers will see if the Gram rebrand leads to steady ecosystem growth and renewed adoption across Telegram’s expanding blockchain projects.
