FINMA, a Switzerland’s independent financial-markets regulator has permitted Switzerland’s first spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) meant at retail investors. The approval was announced on October 20.
The fund will be allowed to hold Bitcoin directly in Swiss investment-fund rules, giving individual investors additional regulated way to gain BTC exposure. The fund manager, ticker and launch date have not yet been made public.
Why FINMA Granted A Diversification Exemption
FINMA categorized the product as an “other alternative investment fund” with a specific risk profile. It also released the fund from the usual diversification rules, which generally require funds to spread their holdings across diverse assets.

According to the regulator, Bitcoin’s long trading history and high trading volume, associated with other cryptocurrencies, supported the exemption.
How The New Approval Differs From The 2021 Fund
The decision is different from a crypto fund FINMA approved in September 2021. That earlier product was open only to capable investors and mainly held a basket of digital assets. The new fund is planned for retail investors.
Risk & Disclosure Requirements
Fund providers must address custody and operational risks and clarify potential losses in the official fund documents. Anyone selling the product must also meet the suitability and disclosure necessities of Switzerland’s Financial Services Act.
FINMA advised that investors could lose a substantial part of their investment. The endorsement gives investors entrance to Bitcoin through a fund structure, but it does not maintain them from Bitcoin’s price volatility.
