SoftBank Group, a Japanese tech investor, plans to launch one of Europe’s biggest AI infrastructure projects, with investments in France that could total €75 billion.
The project aims to build and run 5 gigawatts of AI data centre capacity across France to meet the rising demand for computing power as AI use grows worldwide.
The first phase will invest €45 billion to deliver 3.1 gigawatts of capacity in the Hauts-de-France region by 2031. Planned sites include Bosquel, Bouchain, and Dunkirk, with more locations possible later.
SoftBank announced the project at the Choose France summit hosted by Emmanuel Macron. The company says the new facilities will support AI companies, cloud providers, research groups, businesses, and public organizations.
Chairman and CEO Masayoshi Son called AI a transformational technology that will change industries and economies. He said countries investing in infrastructure now will lead the future digital economy.
Besides providing computing power, the project is expected to create thousands of jobs in engineering, manufacturing, operations, robotics, and data centre management.
This announcement shows the global race to secure AI infrastructure, as governments and tech companies compete to build the computing power needed for more advanced AI models.
