Hyperliquid’s HYPE token surged past the psychological $70 level after US President Donald Trump said the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is working to bring the decentralized perpetual futures platform into the United States in a “fully compliant and legal fashion.” HYPE jumped from around $62 to above $70 after Trump’s remarks at a White House crypto meeting. At the time of writing, the token was trading near $71.92 on August 20, up about 23.43% over 24 hours, after briefly moving above $72.

Trump made the comments while referring to CFTC Chairman Michael Selig, who was among the senior US regulators attending the White House gathering. The president said Selig was working to bring Hyperliquid into the US legally, giving the market a clear signal that regulators are exploring a possible path for the offshore platform to serve American users.

Hyperliquid currently operates outside the US regulatory framework and restricts access for US users. A compliant route into the American market could therefore represent a major shift for the platform and the wider decentralised finance sector. However, Trump’s comments do not amount to regulatory approval, and there is no announced timetable for a US launch.

The CFTC has already shown growing interest in expanding access to regulated crypto derivatives. The regulator has approved several crypto-related derivatives products, while its first Innovation Advisory Committee meeting is scheduled to discuss issues including crypto regulation, artificial intelligence and prediction markets.

The timing is also important because the White House meeting came as the Trump administration continues to push for clearer rules for the crypto industry. Trump separately urged Congress to pass the CLARITY Act, which is intended to establish clearer regulatory responsibilities for the Securities and Exchange Commission and CFTC.

Hyperliquid has also been working on the policy side of the issue. The Hyperliquid Policy Centre, led by CEO Jake Chervinsky, has been advocating for a regulatory pathway that would allow on-chain perpetual futures markets to operate in the US. Chervinsky has said the organisation wants regulators to understand the importance of on-chain financial infrastructure.

The policy group has also submitted comments to the SEC on the possibility of bringing pre-IPO perpetual markets onshore. Its broader argument is that regulated on-chain markets could give US investors access to new financial products while keeping financial innovation within the country.

For HYPE, the immediate reaction has been striking. Breaking above $70 marks an important psychological move for the token, while the possibility of a regulated US presence gives investors a fresh reason to reassess Hyperliquid’s growth prospects. The next question is whether the administration’s comments will be followed by concrete regulatory steps.
