Bitget, a global cryptocurrency exchange, has entered into a formal agreement with the Gelephu Mindfulness City Authority in Bhutan, laying the groundwork to establish a licensed presence within the country’s emerging digital asset economy.
The deal positions Bitget to build a legal footprint inside Gelephu Mindfulness City, a $100 billion autonomous economic zone partly funded by Bhutan’s national Bitcoin reserves, and to eventually apply for a financial services license to operate there.
GMC has been designed to attract high-value roles across finance, technology, and wellness sectors, and this agreement marks Bitget’s early move to secure a seat at that table as the zone’s regulatory framework takes shape.
Bitget Eyes A Foothold In Bhutan’s Digital Finance Ambitions
Gracy Chen, who serves as CEO at Bitget, described GMC as a rising center for digital finance and said the exchange intends to bring its operational experience, technical infrastructure, and support for local talent development as the ecosystem matures.

The partnership doesn’t grant Bitget an immediate license, but it does set the stage for the exchange to formally apply once GMC’s licensing framework is finalized, giving Bitget an early positioning advantage in a jurisdiction still defining its digital asset rules.
Bhutan’s Bitcoin-backed Zone Continues Attracting Global Players
Bitget isn’t the only firm circling GMC’s opportunities. Just last week, the authority appointed 3iQ, a Canadian digital-asset management firm, to oversee a mandate tied to a portion of Gelephu’s Bitcoin treasury.
Under that arrangement, 3iQ will manage an undisclosed slice of the allocated Bitcoin while also committing to a long-term physical presence in the city, along with investment in local workforce training and knowledge sharing.
Together, these moves suggest Bhutan is steadily building out GMC as a legitimate hub for institutional crypto activity, drawing in both exchanges and asset managers eager to establish themselves early in a jurisdiction backed directly by sovereign Bitcoin holdings.
