Russia has intensified its crackdown on cryptocurrency mining by implementing a new ban across Moscow, the broader Moscow Oblast, and specific areas in the Kursk region. This prohibition, commencing from August 15 and lasting until the end of 2032, forbids both mining activities and participation in mining pools inside specified locations.

The ban is a result of Government Decree No. 936, which was signed on July 25 and published on Friday through Russia’s official legal publication portal. The authorities have introduced this measure to alleviate the pressure on regional power grids, which have been increasingly strained by energy-intensive mining operations.

The geographical scope of the restriction includes the city of Moscow, the entirety of Moscow Oblast, eight municipal districts in Kursk Oblast, and the city of Lgov. Essentially, this represents a ban that will last over six years in these areas part of a broader initiative by Russia to enhance regulation of an industry that has rapidly grown alongside its demands on local infrastructure.

Bitcoin mining and similar activities rely on power-intensive computing hardware, prompting many governments around the world to impose limits or restrictions on mining in regions where electricity capacity is limited or where grid stability is threatened.

Russia’s combination of cheap, abundant energy and cold climates in many regions has made it a global hotspot for mining activity. Yet this same growth has pushed regulators to weigh the industry’s economic upside against the strain it places on power networks.

This latest decree underscores that balancing act an attempt to preserve grid reliability without eliminating mining nationwide. Even while the prohibition is limited to certain areas, its more than six-year duration indicates a wider trend toward more stringent, long-term regulation of cryptocurrency mining in Russia.

The decree may require mining businesses that are currently located in the impacted zones to choose between moving their operations to areas where mining is still permitted or ceasing operations completely.
