The proposed Bitcoin BIP-110 soft fork has officially failed after falling short of the miner support required for activation, ending weeks of debate within the Bitcoin community over the future handling of non-payment data on the blockchain.

According to blockchain data shared by Farside UK on X, the proposal was unable to achieve the required 55% signalling threshold needed to proceed. The platform confirmed that the proposal had effectively failed and could no longer reach the minimum level of support necessary for activation unless an unlikely blockchain reorganization occurred.

Earlier during the signalling period, Farside UK had warned that BIP-110 would require more than 73% miner support for the remainder of the voting window to have any chance of crossing the activation threshold. As support continued to lag, the proposal ultimately expired without sufficient backing from miners.

BIP-110 was designed to temporarily restrict non-payment data from being embedded within Bitcoin transactions. Proponents felt that by controlling such data, Bitcoin would be able to maintain its main purpose of being a peer-to-peer payment system while reducing congestion in the blockchain and preventing alternative uses of the platform not related to financial transactions.

Nonetheless, there were several notable Bitcoin stakeholders who expressed their dissatisfaction and disagreement with the proposed change. Some of those people include Michael Saylor, the Strategy Executive Chairman; Adam Back, Blockstream CEO; and Samson Mow, Chief Executive Officer of JAN3. Opponents felt that by limiting certain data in the transactions, Bitcoin would violate its permissionless and open nature and impose unneeded limitations.

The failure of the proposed change highlights the challenges in changing the consensus within Bitcoin because protocol upgrades in the system require a high level of approval from miners, developers, businesses, and other stakeholders.
