Yahoo Acquires News Aggregator App Built By Instagram Co-Founders

Yahoo has acquired the news aggregator app Artifact, created by Instagram cofounders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger.

The AI-powered personalisation technology will be integrated across Yahoo products like the Yahoo news app. Artifact launched in January 2023 and was shutting down a year later due to the market opportunity being not large enough to warrant continued investment.

The app had several new features, including AI summaries of articles, a Twitter-like posting feature, and the ability to allow users to comment on and mark articles as clickbait. However, some of these features required moderation, which the app’s eight-person team could not quite handle.

Artifact’s AI-powered algorithm recommended news and articles based on users’ interests and previous reading habits. Although the app found a fervent fan audience, it never gained widespread appeal.

Yahoo, one of the world’s largest news and information properties, acquired Artifact to continue growing its technology and further its mission of becoming the trusted guide to digital information and the best curator connecting people to the content that matters most to them.
