Tata Technologies’ Use Of AI/ML To Cut Power Usage
Tata Technologies is enhancing its manufacturing processes with artificial intelligence and machine learning, aiming to reduce downtime and pollution. The company is also consistently implementing new technologies, as explained by Yogesh Deo, Senior VP and Delivery Head, Engineering Research and Development.
A year-long study of process data revealed that by using AI/ML models, power consumption was reduced by 18%, process quality improved, fuel consumption was reduced by 10%, and chemical consumption was reduced by 8%. The use of AI has also helped identify anomalies, reducing downtime on the shop floor. For example, a paint shop blower can be halted if one fails, causing 7-8 hours of repairs. By detecting anomalies just before the failure or shutdown, the company can take corrective action immediately, Yogesh Deo, Senior VP and Delivery Head, Engineering Research and Development explained.
AI has also been used to predict tooling failure in the case of dye design. A model can be prepared to predict whether the dye will perform optimally or fail by comparing historical operational data with current data. This correlation between operational data and failure cases helps determine the remaining useful life of the dye.
