Intel Takes on Nvidia and AMD With New AI Chip, Gaudi 3
Intel is launching a new version of its artificial intelligence chip, Gaudi 3, to compete with Nvidia in the growing semiconductor industry.
The updated processor aims to improve performance in training AI systems and running finished software. Intel’s CEO, Pat Gelsinger, expects the new model to have a bigger impact on the market. Nvidia has seen most of the benefit from the booming demand for AI services, but earlier versions of Gaudi failed to achieve the market share gains that Intel had hoped for.
The company is now looking to build on its lead with a chip platform called Blackwell, which will be available later this year.
Intel’s assessment suggests that Gaudi 3 will be faster and more power-efficient than the H100, train certain types of AI models 1.7 times more quickly, and be 1.5 times better at running the software. Intel can’t provide comparisons with Nvidia’s upcoming Blackwell line until those products are publicly available.
