Greece has struck a landmark partnership with OpenAI to integrate artificial intelligence across its education system. The agreement, signed at the Hellenic Expo by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, OpenAI’s Chris Lehane, and Onassis Foundation president Anthony Papadimitriou, will roll out a tailored version of ChatGPT Edu.
The program begins with a pilot in select schools during the next academic year, focusing on improving AI literacy among students and teachers. The Onassis Foundation and The Tipping Point will manage implementation, while OpenAI co-designs training materials to ensure safe and effective use. A nationwide rollout will follow in the second phase.
Launched in 2024, ChatGPT Edu has already been deployed at leading universities including Harvard and Oxford. Officials see Greece as a pioneer in mainstream adoption, with GDPR compliance ensuring alignment with European standards. The deal also includes AI support for SMEs, signaling Greece’s intent to embrace innovation while equipping future generations with cutting-edge digital skills.
