Government Plans AI Use To Reduce Workload
Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden has announced the government’s intention to use artificial intelligence (AI) to assist ministers in reducing their workload and streamlining the civil service.
The government is currently conducting a trial to assess the application of AI technology in processing ministerial red box submissions, which play a crucial role in the decision-making process.
Dowden proposed using AI to handle tasks such as reading, summarizing, and compiling these important documents, potentially replacing the need for civil servants.
The integration of AI into government processes aligns with the broader objective of downsizing the civil service workforce.
However, safety concerns associated with AI technology must be addressed. The government’s guidance on AI usage within the civil service cautions against over-reliance on large language model (LLM) systems, emphasizing the risk of false information emerging in AI-generated content and the importance of cross-checking facts and assertions.
