FTX Founder Recommending Crypto Behind Bars
Sam Bankman-Fried, former CEO of FTX, has turned from a “King of Crypto” to a convict in jail. He was convicted of embezzling billions from FTX customers and defrauding investors and lenders.
His sentencing is set for March 28, 2024, after which he will be transferred to a federal prison. Bankman-Fried continues to provide cryptocurrency advice to guards from his cell walls, despite his departure from startups and trading digital tokens.
His current residence, Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, has faced criticism from defense lawyers and jail guards’ unions due to subpar conditions and chronic understaffing.
He is allowed non-attorney visitors weekly and has access to a specialized laptop for reviewing legal materials.
Bankman-Fried shares his unit with Genaro García Luna, Mexico’s former secretary of public security, and Juan Orlando Hernández, former President of Honduras, awaiting trial on federal drug-trafficking and firearms charges. Bill Baroni, a prison consultant, suggests that Bankman-Fried may bring his mackerel packets as currency inside the prison system.
