“DIGITAL COINS, A HELPING HAND, MAKING CHANGE ACROSS THE LAND!”
Why are Dubai-based charities accepting digital assets for the first time? The UAE has pushed modern philanthropy by allowing donors to donate Bitcoin and other digital assets to Dubai-based non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
As part of its larger digital transformation and governance strategy, the Dubai Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities (IACAD) has introduced a regulated platform that allows charities and foundations in the UAE to accept donations in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other virtual assets.
This project aims to make charity giving simpler, more transparent, and in line with international financial technology trends.
It also offers donors creative ways to donate while guaranteeing that money is safeguarded within a safe legal framework. According to authorities, the service would help long-term humanitarian initiatives under transparent regulatory control, improve governance, and protect donor money.
Globally, digital philanthropy is rapidly growing. According to a recent estimate, over 70% of the top 100 international organisations presently accept cryptocurrency payments, and more than $1 billion in bitcoin was donated to charitable causes in 2024.
Donations of digital assets increased by around 400% to over $10,978 on average in 2024.
The move is consistent with Dubai’s overarching objective of being a global hub for innovation, business, and charity by 2071.
In recent years, the UAE has funded large foreign projects, including a $500 million maternal health fund backed by the Gates Foundation and closer ties with African charitable leaders.
