Cybercrimes Trigger Action From China’s National Prosecutor
China’s Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP) is targeting criminals using blockchain and metaverse projects for illegal activities amid an increase in online fraud, cyber violence, and personal information infringement.
The SPP reports a 64% rise in cybercrime-related telecom fraud charges, while traditional crimes like gambling, theft, pyramid schemes, and counterfeiting have expanded into cyberspace.
Charges related to internet theft have increased by nearly 23%, while online counterfeiting and sales of inferior goods have surged by almost 86%.
During January and November, authorities charged 280,000 individuals in cybercrime cases, accounting for 19% of all criminal offenses.
Zhang Xiaojin, director of the SPP’s Fourth Procuratorate, warned citizens and digital asset participants about investment scams in the local crypto economy.
