Crypto Adoption Gets Boost In Thailand
By Kapil Rajyaguru
In a bold move to integrate cryptocurrencies into everyday life, Thailand has launched a pilot program allowing tourists to use Bitcoin for payments in Phuket, one of its most visited destinations. Announced on January 8 by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, the initiative aims to offer foreign visitors a seamless, alternative payment option while staying within Thailand’s existing legal framework.
Tourists will register their Bitcoin via a Thai exchange, complete identity verification, and make purchases effortlessly. A clearinghouse will convert Bitcoin transactions into Thai Baht, ensuring smooth operations. The program is part of Thailand’s strategy to keep its tourism-dependent economy competitive and attract global digital-savvy visitors.
Pichai highlighted the utility of this initiative by referencing war refugees from Russia and Ukraine who could use Bitcoin to purchase property in Thailand without the hassle of converting to local currency.
The push for crypto adoption follows former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s December 2024 call for Thailand to embrace digital assets. Meanwhile, Binance Thailand’s CEO, Nirun Fuwattananukul, praised regulatory steps to create a “mature ecosystem” merging traditional finance and cryptocurrencies.
Thailand’s bold move signals its readiness to compete in the global digital economy, bringing innovation and tourism together in a thrilling mix of progress and opportunity.
