Cardano experienced a brief chain split after an attacker used an AI-generated script to exploit a known bug, causing newer and older node versions to validate a malformed transaction differently.
Some block producers followed a “poisoned” chain while others stayed on the correct one, prompting emergency patches and upgrade instructions.
No user funds were lost, though exchanges paused deposits and withdrawals. Charles Hoskinson called the incident a targeted attack by a disgruntled operator and warned that restoring full consistency could take weeks.
