Bitcoin Core development showed a strong recovery in 2025 following a multi-year slowdown, according to metrics shared by Jameson Lopp. The software continues to power roughly 78% of all Bitcoin full nodes, maintaining its central role in the network.
Activity on the Bitcoin Development Mailing List increased by 60% year-on-year, despite a previous decline after the platform’s migration to Google Groups.
Contributor participation also grew, with 135 individuals contributing to Bitcoin Core during the year, up from about 112 previously. While overall code modifications remained relatively stable at around 285,000 lines, the project marked a major milestone by completing its first publicly disclosed third-party security audit.
Conducted by Quarkslab and funded by Brink, the audit found no critical or high-severity vulnerabilities. Funding support also remains steady, with VanEck pledging a share of its Bitcoin ETF profits to ongoing Bitcoin Core development.
