The use of Coinbase’s x402 protocol by AI-powered agents has skyrocketed, with payments growing 4,300% in the past week to reach 957,000 transactions, according to x402scan.com.
Agents buying and selling services surged 30,000% and 368%, respectively, reflecting booming integration between AI and blockchain. The x402 protocol, supported by Google and Cloudflare, allows instant, near-zero-fee crypto payments across any blockchain.
Developed on top of the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” standard, x402 lets AI agents pay directly online without sign-ups. Google plans to integrate it into its AP2 payment system, while Cloudflare recently launched its NET Dollar stablecoin using the same protocol.
The trend signals the rise of the “agentic economy,” where AI bots independently transact and collaborate. Both the Ethereum Foundation and Consensys are advancing related frameworks to help agents operate autonomously — positioning blockchain as the backbone for the next generation of machine-led digital commerce.
