Evolution Of Virtual Reality: From Stereoscope To Vision Pro

By Vishakha Thakur

Many sectors, including media, medicine, and academia, are feeling the effects of the rapid development of virtual reality technology.

The concept of virtual reality has a long history, dating back to the 1930s.

Our first thoughts when we hear the term “virtual reality” usually involve a contemporary VR headset and the plethora of computer technology and software that are starting to support virtual reality.

Let’s look at the history of virtual reality and its growing ecosystem of gear, software, and content producers, starting with the first head-mounted display in the 1960s and ending with the most recent Apple Vision Pro launch.

What is Virtual Reality?

The possibilities for virtual reality are boundless, as it is a synthetic and immersive experience that might be entirely different from the actual world or similar to it. Computer technology often produces virtual reality experiences that are shown to the user via a monitor or headset, creating an engaging and dynamic three-dimensional world. Users should be able to move around and interact with objects just like they would in the real world during a perfect virtual reality encounter.

When Virtual Reality is done correctly, it can take us to places far beyond the real world and be brilliant and joyful. If VR is done incorrectly, consumers may experience motion sickness and frustration. Hardware constraints can occasionally be attributed to technology.

History Of Virtual Reality

Since its modest beginnings in the 1800s with stereoscopic visuals, virtual reality has advanced significantly. Virtual reality provides an interactive and engaging 3D environment that lets users experience worlds beyond reality.

  • The 1950s and 1960s saw the invention of virtual reality, which was typified by massive, room-sized devices and immersive theatre experiences. Many people consider the futuristic Sensorama, a device Morton Heilig created in the 1960s that offered spectators immersive, multi-sensory experiences, as one of the first instances of virtual reality.
  • The 1980s and 1990s saw the emergence of virtual reality in the recognizable shape it has today. The current VR period began in the mid-1980s with the introduction of a variety of VR devices by Jaron Lanier and his business, VPL Research, including the widely-used ‘DataGlove’ headset and the ‘EyePhone’ headset. During this period, science fiction greatly popularised virtual reality, solidifying its place in popular culture.
  • Even with these exciting advances, early virtual reality systems were extremely expensive and had severe technical constraints. Many users found using the technology uncomfortable because of its lack of visual fidelity and latency, which resulted in a period of disillusionment in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
  • The 21st century brought enthusiasm and interest in virtual reality technology back. Unquestionably, the video gaming industry was the primary driver behind the explosive growth of 3D graphics and accelerated technology, which served as the spark. The widespread use of smartphones has also accelerated the development of high-performance, reasonably priced sensors that are perfect for monitoring motion in virtual reality.

How has Meta changed the VR landscape?

Meta purchased Oculus in 2014, and the company later launched the Oculus Rift in 2016, enabling the public to enjoy high-quality virtual reality. This was the turning point that caused Meta to launch the now-dominant Meta Quest, switch to the Meta brand, and make significant investments in the metaverse.

Other tech behemoths have now entered the VR space, including Sony with PlayStation VR and HTC with its Vive headset. Apple is joining the virtual reality party later than companies like Oculus by Meta, HTC, and Sony, which have already made significant inroads into the market, according to an uninformed observer. With the release of the Vision Pro, Apple has taken a step forward in its continuous effort to push the limits of technology.

The field of virtual reality technology is constantly changing nowadays, impacting a wide range of industries, including entertainment, healthcare, and education.
