NFT Projects For Social Good – Part 2

Non-fungible tokens, digital assets are now driving social change by facilitating charitable fundraising for causes ranging from female empowerment to supporting philanthropic efforts in war-torn countries like Ukraine. Here are a few examples of such NFT projects for social good.
Celebrating differences
The ‘Valley of Belonging’ was launched by the Sandbox and the organization People of Crypto Lab (POC). Their first project in The Sandbox was a collaboration with the cosmetics brand NYX Professional Makeup to celebrate Pride Month with an 8,430 NFT avatar collection featuring voxelized makeup looks on the avatars.
Avatar characteristics included over 36 skin tones and eight NYX looks to demonstrate that makeup is not gender or sexual orientation specific. Other customizable traits included prosthetic limbs and various Muslim head coverings such as the hijab.
This activation even attempted to represent handicapped members of the community by including non-player characters (NPCs) in wheelchairs who guided players through special quests and mini games.
NYX donated the entire $50,000 proceeds from the avatar NFTs sold out sale to the Los Angeles LGBT Center.
Wildlife conservation
Decentralized carbon credit exchange based in the Netherlands Coorest and the Southern Hemisphere conservation consulting firm PLCnetwork collaborated to tokenize individual real-world endangered animals at game reserves and privately owned conservation areas in Africa. Holders of these wildlife NFTs can sponsor an elephant, lion, cheetah, or rhino. Profits from sales will go toward feeding, sheltering, and protecting the animals they represent.
Each NFT’s metadata contains information about the species, age, and gender of each tokenized animal. Holders will also be invited to meet the animals at the wildlife reserve. 70% of the funds from these Wildlife NFTs are distributed to the game reserve or conservation area on a monthly or set schedule.
Support for Ukraine
When the Russian-Ukraine war began in February, virtual digital asset donors flocked to Ukraine to support causes, putting DAOs (decentralised autonomous organisations) to the test as fundraising tools. The sale of an NFT of the Ukrainian flag raised $8 million for Ukraine DAO in just a few days. The proceeds benefited non-profit and non-governmental organisations.
Over 102,000 crypto asset donations totaling $54.7 million in ether, bitcoin, and tether were tracked after only two weeks of conflict, supporting the Ukrainian government and Come Back Alive, an NGO providing military support. The Giving Block, a cryptocurrency donation platform, also raised funds for Ukraine’s emergency response. According to The Giving Block, ether received the most donations in 2021, totaling $30.79 million.
