Spot A Blink & Catch The Deepfake

By Sandeep Kasalkar

Have you watched Mark Zuckerberg boast that he has “absolute control” over the stolen data of billions of people? Have you seen Barack Obama call Donald Trump a “complete dipshit”? Have you seen Jon Snow’s emotional apologies for the disappointing Game of Thrones finale?

If you say yes, you’ve witnessed a deepfake. Deepfakes, the modern-day equivalent of Photoshopping, create photographs of fictitious events using a type of artificial intelligence known as deep learning; therefore, the term “deepfake.”

How To Recognise A Deepfake Crypto Scam In Seconds

Deepfakes employ deep learning artificial intelligence (AI) to manipulate and change original information, such as switching faces in movies, images, and audio, to generate very realistic digital content. Deepfake technology is frequently used by cryptocurrency fraudsters to fabricate films of famous people to carry out their schemes.

An example of such a scam was FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried being targeted by scammers who used his voice to trick users into clicking a link that led to a malicious website promising to double their Cryptocurrency.

Because of the unpredictable nature of cryptocurrencies, people often worry and adopt a “better safe than sorry” mentality, which might make them vulnerable to deepfake frauds.

How to recognize a deep fake: Look at the eyes

  •  Watching for eye blinks is a helpful approach to rapidly identify a deepfake. This is because deepfakes are made from online picture files, and such images typically show the person with their eyes open. Therefore, it is necessary to replicate the subject’s eyes blinking during a deepfake.
  •  Asking questions that only the genuine person can respond to, such as “What restaurant did we meet at for lunch last week?” is, of course, the greatest way to identify someone.
  • Additionally, deepfake detection AI software is already available, and this signals that significant technical advancements in this field are imminent.
