World Mobile has launched a blockchain-enabled 5G network using hydrogen-powered drones flying at 60,000 feet in the stratosphere. Partnering with Indonesian telecom firm Protelindo, the initiative—called World Mobile Stratospheric—delivers wireless coverage of up to 15,000 square kilometers per drone via 450 guidable beams.
According to World Mobile’s Chief Business Officer Charles Barnett, the network offers 6 milliseconds of total latency and provides service up to 18 times cheaper per gigabyte compared to satellite infrastructure.
The project aims to bridge connectivity gaps left by traditional telecoms and reach underserved communities worldwide. World Mobile also runs a decentralized ground-based physical infrastructure network combining traditional and independent providers to expand coverage.
However, operating and maintaining a stratospheric telecom network poses significant technical and regulatory challenges, which the company is actively addressing to realize its global connectivity goals.
