Volkswagen Sets Up AI Lab, Looks To Embrace The Tech
Volkswagen has established its own artificial intelligence lab, reflecting the growing ambitions of the car industry to adopt AI technology.
The lab will serve as a globally networked competence center and incubator to produce proofs of concept in the field of automotive innovations.
AI labs are research and development hubs for exploring AI breakthroughs, similar to OpenAI and Google’s DeepMind.
Volkswagen plans to bring its lab’s AI innovations to its own vehicles to make them smarter. The company aims to link external digital ecosystems with the vehicle, creating an even better product experience.
Volkswagen is not planning to manufacture any production models of its own, but plans to hold talks with partners about licensing its proprietary AI technology for use in their vehicles.
The announcement comes as other auto firms push heavily into artificial intelligence to boost their technology credentials and make their cars smarter.
