According to Vitalik Buterin, the initial rollup-centric strategy for Ethereum no longer makes sense, and a reconsideration of how Layer-2 networks fit into the future is necessary.
Buterin stated in a thorough essay that while many Layer-2 networks have had difficulty entirely decentralising, Ethereum’s base layer has advanced more quickly than anticipated. Ethereum might not require L2s as tightly tied extensions if transaction fees remain low and gas restrictions are predicted to increase.
Although Buterin cautioned that systems depending on multisig bridges do not actually enhance the main network, Layer-2s like Arbitrum and Optimism were created to scale Ethereum. He stated that some L2s might choose to stay centralised.
Instead of requiring Ethereum shards, Buterin proposed considering L2s as separate networks with special advantages like speed or privacy.
In response to competition from single-chain rivals like Solana, Ethereum is continuing to enhance its foundation layer and scalability plan.
