Rishi Sunak Races To Tighten AI Rules
Rishi Sunak is hurrying to modernise the government’s approach to artificial intelligence regulation, amid warnings that the business poses an existential threat to humanity unless countries drastically adjust how they allow the technology to be developed.
The prime minister and his officials are considering measures to strengthen UK regulation of cutting-edge technology, as industry figures warn that the government’s AI white paper, published only two months ago, is already out of date.
According to government insiders, the prime minister is growing increasingly concerned about the hazards posed by AI, just weeks after his chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, stated that the UK should “win the race” to develop the technology.
Sunak is urging partners to write an international agreement on how to develop AI capabilities, which might result in the establishment of a new global regulator. Meanwhile, Conservative and Labour MPs are urging the prime minister to introduce a second measure that would establish the United Kingdom’s first AI-focused authority.
