Pressure Mounts On Worldcoin As More People Sign Up
Worldcoin, a controversial project launched by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has attracted 2.3 million users globally. However, security and privacy concerns are growing as individuals receive 25 tokens and digital identities for biometric data.
Worldcoin uses orbs to scan a person’s iris, which is stored in encrypted form or deleted according to user preferences. The Electronic Privacy Information Center, a U.S. privacy campaigner, has voiced concerns about Worldcoin’s privacy nightmare and its potential privacy risks. They argue that Worldcoin bribes vulnerable individuals with unchangeable biometrics, such as iris scans and facial recognition images, for a small payout. Altman, a U.S. privacy campaigner, believes it is becoming harder to differentiate human activity from artificial intelligence. Worldcoin aims to establish a digital passport, a global financial and identity network based on proof of personhood.
Kenya, Portugal, Argentina, Britain, France, and Germany have initiated investigations into Worldcoin. Kenya temporarily suspended activities while assessing potential risks. Britain is monitoring Worldcoin, France announces checks, and Germany has been investigating since 2022. Portugal is scrutinizing data collection practices and coordinating with German authorities. Argentina has requested clarification on risk management procedures and personal data processing frameworks.
