“Exchanges adding BTC to Lightning is a clear vote of confidence in instant Bitcoin payments.”

The Lightning Network (LN), Bitcoin’s layer-2 scaling solution, has reached a new capacity high, indicating fresh impetus following a protracted period of decrease.
Lightning capacity reached its highest level ever recorded at 5,637 BTC, or over $490 million, according to data from Amboss.
Additionally, LN capacity exceeded 5,606 BTC, surpassing the previous high established in March 2023, according to Bitcoin Visuals.
As additional Bitcoin entered the network, the increase mostly occurred in November and December.
Major cryptocurrency exchanges are mostly responsible for the growth. Companies like Binance and OKX have added more Bitcoin to Lightning channels this month, according to analytics platform Amboss.
This demonstrates the increasing trust in Lightning as a quick and inexpensive Bitcoin payment layer.
But the data also shows an intriguing pattern. Even if the network is receiving more Bitcoin, utilisation indicators are still below previous highs. There are presently 14,940 Lightning nodes, compared to a high of more than 20,700 in 2022. Additionally, the number of payment channels has decreased to 48,678, indicating consolidation as opposed to growth.
Lightning’s technology is advancing concurrently. Taproot Assets was recently updated to version 0.7 by Lightning Labs, which added features including support for larger transactions, auditable asset supply, and reusable addresses.
Stablecoins and other assets can now operate safely on Bitcoin while utilising Lightning for quick, inexpensive transfers thanks to this update.
Additionally, the ecosystem is drawing new investment. Recently, Tether led an $8 million fundraising round for Speed, a business focused on Lightning.
