Jamaica Pushes To Overcome Challenges With Its Digital Currency JAM
Jamaica is working to address issues related to its central bank digital currency, JAM-DEX, launched in 2021.
However, countries like Nigeria, the Bahamas, and Jamaica are experiencing lower adoption rates than expected.
Despite having 190,000 JAM-DEX users, it is suggested that incentives should be more widespread to increase adoption rates.
Digitalization, such as digital transactions, credit cards, bank cards, and CBDCs, can help eliminate cash-related issues.
The National Commercial Bank of Jamaica (NCB) is currently the sole financial institution facilitating JAM-DEX transactions through the Lynk wallet.
JN Bank joined JAM-DEX in December 2022, a positive step towards increasing CBDC use. Natalie Haynes, the BOJ’s Deputy Governor in charge of banking and currency operations, notes that participation is lower than desired and is testing virtual solutions, such as dynamic QR codes.
