Interpol Starts Investigating Crimes In Metaverse

According to a BBC report, the global police agency Interpol is looking into how it can investigate crimes in the Metaverse. Interpol Secretary General Jurgen Stock told the BBC that the agency is working hard to respond to “sophisticated and professional” criminals who are adapting to any new technological tool available to them in order to commit crimes.

The Metaverse is an online world in which people exist as 3D avatars in shared virtual spaces. Interpol also created its own virtual reality (VR) space, recreating its Lyon headquarters. Users can explore the environment to participate in immersive training courses in forensic investigation and other policing capabilities.

“We have seen if we are doing it too late, it already impacts trust in the tools we are using, and therefore the Metaverse. On similar platforms that already exist, criminals are using it,” said Jurgen Stock.

Interpol’s VR space allows police officers to experience what the Metaverse might be like, giving them a sense of what crimes might occur and how they might be policed.
