Google Play Alters Policy On Tokenized Digital Assets
Google Play made a significant policy change today, allowing developers to include digital assets such as NFTs in their store apps and games. Companies that elect to offer the opportunity to buy, sell, or earn tokenized assets must make it explicit in the Play Console that the app contains blockchain-based aspects.
According to Joseph Mills, Google Play’s Group Product Manager, in a blog post shared with CoinDesk, this will allow partners to reimagine “traditional games with user-owned content” and enhance “user loyalty through unique NFT rewards.”
Mills emphasizes the significance of user trust in tokenized assets, stating that developers cannot promote or glamorize earnings from gaming or trading activities. This aligns with Google Plays’ Real-Money Gambling, Games, and Contests policy, preventing apps from promoting purchases of in-game items like loot boxes for NFTs without meeting gambling eligibility requirements.
