“Within the next few years, AI co-workers will be built into all CIA analytic platforms, acting as a classified form of generative AI to support analysts with everyday tasks,” said CIA Deputy Director Michael Ellis at an event in Washington, DC.

He did, however, assert that “key decisions” would still be made by humans. The US Department of Defence and the AI company Anthropic are at odds over the CIA’s AI goals.

CIA Goes All-in On AI After Testing 300+ Projects
In March, the Department of Defence designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk, and US President Donald Trump ordered all government agencies to immediately stop utilising Anthropic’s technology.
A US appeals court rejected Anthropic’s urgent request to temporarily halt the label on Wednesday, further entangling the parties in a legal battle over the designation.
Ellis did not directly reference Anthropic when he said that the CIA “cannot allow the whims of a single company” to restrict its capabilities.
Ellis claims that in an effort to “bring new capabilities to our mission,” the CIA evaluated more than 300 AI initiatives last year, including language translation and the analysis of vast volumes of data. AI has already been adopted by the CIA for various intelligence tasks.

Ellis disclosed that the CIA has already generated its first intelligence report using AI, indicating an increasing role for AI in operations going forward.
He emphasised that maintaining an advantage over China is important because the two countries’ previously large technological divide has already considerably shrunk.
“In terms of technological innovation, China was nowhere near America five to ten years ago,” Ellis stated. “Today, that simply isn’t true.”
