ChatGPT Drafts Law To Regulate AI in Costa Rica
When Costa Rican lawmakers wanted to draw attention to the need to regulate artificial intelligence, they asked ChatGPT to write a new law to do it for them.
Members of Congress instructed the chatbot to “think like a lawyer” and design legislation in accordance with the Constitution. They then transmitted the resulting text to the legislature verbatim.
ChatGPT suggested that Costa Rica establish an entity to regulate AI systems based on the concepts of accountability, explainability, bias prevention, and human rights protection.
The bill was introduced in May, but it is currently being debated in public before being sent to the parliamentary commission for modifications and additional debate in Congress.
Costa Rica is the ninth Latin American country in the last year to debate or pass legislation governing artificial intelligence.
