Buenos Aires to Issue Blockchain-Based Digital ID
Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires, is integrating its bureaucracy with blockchain technology, allowing residents to access identity documents via a digital wallet starting in October. The first available documents include birth and marriage certificates, income proof, and academic verification. Health data and payment management will be integrated in the future, and a roadmap for implementing the blockchain-based solution will be defined by the end of 2023.
The project infrastructure is QuarkID, a digital identity protocol developed by Extrimian, powered by zkSync Era, an Ethereum scaling protocol. This technology enables proof-of-concept without revealing specific information about a statement. QuarkID wallets are self-sovereign, allowing citizens to manage their credentials when interacting with government, businesses, and others. ZkSync Era serves as the settlement layer for QuarkID, ensuring each citizen holds the correct credentials.
