Bitfinex Recovers $314K of the $3.6 bn Stolen BTC
Bitfinex reported today that it had recovered $312,219 in cash and 6.9 Bitcoin Cash (worth $1,951 today) lost during a 2016 breach.
The exchange claimed in a Thursday release that it received the assets from the US Department of Homeland Security.
Bitfinex, situated in the British Virgin Islands, is collaborating with law enforcement to retrieve and refund assets stolen in a cyberattack years ago.
Today’s recovery is merely the tip of the iceberg: clients lost a significant amount of Bitcoin and other assets as hackers stole about 120,900 BTC in the attack, which is presently worth $3.6 billion.
Nearly $100 million in Bitcoin stolen in the 2016 Bitfinex breach has been transferred from idle wallets, totaling $98.3 million. The recovered assets will be given to holders of Bitfinex’s Recovery Right Tokens. The stolen funds were worth over $2.3 billion, uncovered through a sophisticated laundering technique.
